Display scale, with restraint

Set the big line at display size; keep ordinary lines small.

Two film frames side by side. The left holds one very large word. The right holds a small line on a mostly empty frame. One 9 to 20% tall4 to 6% tall

Takeaways

  • Hero lines: 9 to 20 percent of frame height.
  • Quiet lines: 4 to 6 percent, on sparse beats only.
  • At least 2.5 times between the largest in dense and sparse beats.

What it means

Scale ranks ideas. The line that matters is big enough to fill the frame, and the quiet lines are small and sit in an empty frame. Type at the same size for five seconds is wrong, because the contrast between big and small is the rhythm.

In a RasanAI film

Hero lines reach 9 to 20 percent cap height at least once per beat and span 40 to 90 percent of the frame width; ordinary lines stay at 4 to 6 percent, and only on beats declared sparse.
